12.4.2022: New Honorary Consul of Bhutan on Inaugural Visit to Essen

On Tuesday (12.04.), Lord Mayor Thomas Kufen received the new Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Bhutan, Prof. Dr. Erhard Meyer-Galow, for his inaugural visit in Essen City Hall.

In his function as Honorary Consul, Prof. Dr. Erhard Meyer-Galow is responsible for the federal states of Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein and has been in office since January 2022. The consulate is located in the ChorForum Essen. For 25 years, Prof. Dr. Erhard Meyer-Galow has already been actively providing development aid to Bhutan. With "Pro Bhutan e.V." he supports humanitarian projects - e.g. the construction of a hospital, a school for the blind in Khaling and a school for hearing impaired children in Drukgyel.

On November 25, 2020, the Kingdom of Bhutan and Germany established diplomatic relations with each other. Previously, the Kingdom of Bhutan had relations with only 52 countries and international organizations. Friendly relations between the Kingdom of Bhutan and Germany have continued to deepen in recent years. The establishment of diplomatic relations is expected to intensify the cooperation.

"Therefore, I am very pleased that another honorary consulate has now been opened here in Essen. The physical proximity is certainly conducive to regular exchanges and approaches to cooperation in the future," said Mayor Kufen. In the joint exchange, the city leader and the honorary consul explored cooperation opportunities and discussed the Corona pandemic and the situation in Ukraine. "I wish you every success for your start here in Essen and good luck for the upcoming work at the consulate," Thomas Kufen concluded.
